128,000 tons of steel help build the world's longest suspension bridge

The Canakkale 1915 Bridge under construction in Turkey is a steel infrastructure that spans the Dardanelles that separates Eurasia. The project started on March 18, 2018 and is scheduled to be completed and opened to traffic in 2023.

As the Turkish government embarks on a series of infrastructure investment plans, new giant tunnels and bridges are being built in parts of the country, and the "Canakkale 1915" bridge project is a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic Engineering (2023 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of Turkey).

The northwestern region of Turkey has long been an important link between Europe and Asia, and ground traffic now travels through the narrow area around Istanbul all the way to the Greek and Bulgarian borders. The main span of the "Canakkale 1915" bridge reaches 2023m, which will set a new world record for bridge span after completion. In recent years, Turkey's economic growth has accelerated, accompanied by agricultural expansion, increased transport links, and an increase in the number of tourists year by year, which has also led to severe traffic congestion around major cities. Considering that the transportation system is facing increasing pressure, the Turkish government officially announced in 2011 the "Centennial Vision 2023" plan, which aims to improve the transportation capacity of road, rail and sea networks, while accelerating economic development. It became one of the top ten economies in the world when the country was founded.

The "Canakkale 1915" bridge under construction is located in Canakkale Province, northwestern Turkey. After completion, it will serve the 320km-long Konali-Tekirdag-Canakkale-Basri Expressway. The highway will connect Anatolia with Eastern Thrace. Currently, the journey takes a 30-minute ferry ride, but once the bridge is built, the journey will be shortened to a short 10-minute drive.

With a span of 2023m between the two elevated towers, the "Canakkale 1915" bridge will be the longest suspension bridge in the world, surpassing Japan's Akashi Kaikyo Bridge by 32m. The full length of the "Canakkale 1915" bridge, including the viaduct approach, will extend to 4608m.

Once completed, the "Canakkale 1915" bridge project will consume 128,000 tons of steel. In terms of specific categories, the bridge deck will be constructed of reinforced concrete, and the bridge structure supporting the pavement will be supported by a pair of shear-connected longitudinal steel box girders, which will be connected by steel beams positioned on external cantilevers. The deck with a width of 45m can adequately handle a large number of commercial and private traffic, and there are three vehicle lanes and sidewalks on each side, which is expected to make a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of Canakkale Province.

The two lifting towers of the "Canakkale 1915" bridge are located on two steel platforms, each of which is installed on the foundation of a 65,000-ton giant caisson, which also makes the bridge the fourth tallest bridge in the world. Its striking design stretches upwards to 318m and is quite imposing.

In particular, the steel components of the bridge represent a strategic partnership between Turkish and Korean suppliers. Turkey's Cimtas Steel and South Korea's Pohang Steel reached a cooperation intention to jointly provide 35,000 tons of steel plates for tower structures, cable systems and pavements, 52,000 tons of steel plates for bridge decks, and support The suspension cable system of the bridge deck provides 41,000 tons of steel wire.

Unusually, the "Canakkale 1915" bridge was also run as a "design + build" project. For bridge construction, the design is usually completed prior to the selection of contractors and suppliers, however, the construction and design of the project are carried out simultaneously, requiring coordination between architects and contractors early in the project.

The record-length steel suspension bridge "Canakkale 1915", with a total investment of US$3 billion, will bring about major changes to the transportation system in northwestern Turkey in the future, and is expected to have a socio-economic chain reaction throughout Turkey and Eastern Europe.
